Orla O’Brien and Amy Warren from the New England Aquarium were conducting a survey of marine life in the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument when they observed the cetaceans, WHDH reported. This large protected area is roughly the size of Connecticut and is located around 130 miles southeast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. “Blue whales have been sighted infrequently in the area over the past decade: twice in the area that is now the marine monument, and six or so sightings in similar areas of the Atlantic, so it is an uncommon sighting,” O’Brien, an assistant scientist at the New England Aquarium’s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, told Newsweek....
The sighting was recorded by fisherman Josh Trosvig, who has sailed in the region for decades. It was later confirmed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), who said Trosvig’s images were the first visual evidence of the endangered whales in the Bering Sea during winter. “I took the time to take these pictures and video because the encounter was unique to me. I have watched many thousands of whales feeding in the 35 years I have sailed the North Pacific and Bering, yet none like this,” Trosvig, who captains the cod fishing vessel Cerulean, told NOAA....

Earlier today, England’s Chester Zoo announced to its Facebook page that it was welcoming a pair of incredibly rare ‘dancing’ lemurs as part of its conservation breeding program to help save the species from extinction. The pair — female Beatrice and male Elliot — made the 4,000-mile journey to England from the Duke Lemur Center in North Carolina. Called Coquerel’s sifaka lemurs, these tiny dancers are native to the island of Madagascar....

The women were kayaking on Lake Forest in the city of Daphne when the incident occurred, WKRG reported. Initially, the alligator flipped over the kayak of one of the women, Michelle Hartley, who subsequently swam over to her friend’s boat in attempt to get to safety.
