William Strampel, 71, received his sentence Wednesday in Ingham County Circuit Court in Lansing, Michigan. He originally was charged with sexual assault in addition to the other charges, but was acquitted of that particular charge. Strampel, who was dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, was accused of using his position to “sexually harass, demean and proposition students” who met with him to discuss their classes. He also was accused of not monitoring and following up with protocols that had required another person to be in the exam room with Nassar, the disgraced former Michigan State athletic department doctor, for certain procedures and limiting skin-to-skin contact....

Richard Sackler, a member of the family that owns the company, was asked in court Wednesday whether each bears responsibility for the opioid crisis, to which he answered, “No.” Purdue Pharma, the maker of the powerful prescription pain drug OxyContin, is facing thousands of lawsuits brought against it for misuse of the drug. Sackler said in an email five years after OxyContin’s launch that the company would have to “hammer on the abusers in every way possible,” calling people misusing the drug “the culprits and the problem....

The Russia-Ukraine war, launched by President Vladimir Putin in late February, defined much of 2022’s international affairs as much of the West condemned the invasion for lacking justification, violating contemporary international norms and for human rights abuses allegedly committed by Russian soldiers. Russia, despite the vast size of its military, has struggled to achieve substantial goals in Ukraine after more than 10 months of fighting.
