Tracker Power Outage US reported 3.9 million outages early Tuesday morning, with hundreds of thousands of CenterPoint Energy, Oncor, American Electric Power Texas, CPS Energy, and Austin Energy customers without power. Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has said electricity demand is exceeding supply in the freezing temperatures and has told energy providers to implement controlled and rotating outages. President and CEO Bill Magness said in a news release issued on Monday: “ERCOT and Texas electric companies have been able to restore service to hundreds of thousands of households today, but we know there are many people who are still waiting....

The law expands ballot access to more than 800,000 noncitizens and “Dreamers” residing in New York City, allowing them to vote in municipal, but not state or federal, elections. It went into effect after Adams declined to veto it. Last month, top New York Republicans called the bill “dangerous” and “unconstitutional.” During an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, host Jake Tapper pressed him about the law, asking whether he thinks it is right that people who have not taken a citizenship test or sworn an oath to the United States are now able to vote in elections in the U....

Silver issued a sternly worded memo to team owners warning of “significant” penalties for teams resting healthy players, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. That’s a harsh prediction from someone whose livelihood depends on college football. Herbstreit is not only the lead analyst in the booth for the ESPN/ABC college football game of the week on Saturday nights during the fall, he’s a mainstay host for ESPN’s wildly-popular College GameDay road show. That’s what Sporting News learned when we dug deeper into the results of the survey conducted by Langer Research Associates for ESPN. One question in the survey of 1,423 adults conducted from May 3-7 was whether they detect a political bias in ESPN’s coverage. About 30 percent of the respondents said they detect bias; within that group, 63 percent said it’s a liberal bias while 30 percent said it’s a conservative bias....

EU Ambassador to China Nicolas Chapuis and the ambassadors of the 27 EU states to Beijing co-authored a letter published Wednesday on the EU mission to China’s website and by the China Daily newspaper, which is owned by the Chinese Communist Party’s propaganda department. The letter called for closer cooperation between Brussels and Beijing, despite political concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. The original letter included the passage: “But the outbreak of the coronavirus in China, and its subsequent spread to the rest of the world over the past three months, has meant that our pre-existing plans have been temporarily side-tracked....

The EU is planning to target airlines and travel groups in the sanctions, which come after the organization accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of purposefully using migrants to destabilize neighboring countries. According to a draft of the sanction obtained by the Associated Press, the affected companies are being accused of helping Belarus bring migrants to the country. From there, the migrants would be encouraged by the country to cross international borders into Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania....

The dollar and euro have reached parity over concerns that Russia could cut off gas supplies to the continent amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and severe sanctions imposed on President Vladimir Putin’s government. A loss of confidence by German investors also appears to be partly to blame for the decline in the euro on Tuesday as fears mount of a potential recession in the EU.
