Happily, yes. In “20th Century Pop . . . A Musical Celebration,” running at Rainbow and Stars through Feb. 3, Clayton and ace costars Marianne Faithfull and Darlene Love turn a lineup of rockera songs into a probing reappraisal. The three singers are ingeniously–and idiosyncratically–matched. Clayton brings gospel power; Love brings the robust exuberance she brought to the Crystals; and Faithful brings the ravages of time. They explore familiar songs–“Up on the Roof,” “He’s a Rebel,” “Let’s Stay Together”–from different sides, bringing to them not just their voices but the wisdom of their years. It’s a gift.
