With the roster move the Falcons will save $3.75 million against the salary cap by cutting Jackson, who will be 32 before the season begins.

Since joining the Falcons in 2013 Jackson has averaged just 3.60 yards per carry and scored just 13 touchdowns in 27 games while often playing through a handful of injuries.

With Jackson out of the picture, the Falcons could turn to the undersized Devonta Freeman as their feature back.

Jackson was a three-time Pro Bowler with the Rams before leaving St. Louis after nine years. He is one of only six running backs in NFL history with eight consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons. But he ran for only 543 yards in 2013 with the Falcons during an injury-plagued year and had just 707 yards last season in Atlanta. Should Jackson’s career be over, he’d retire with 11,388 over 11 NFL seasons.
