One half of the couple, TikToker @Lydia_bird3, first announced the trip over the weekend in a video that has now been viewed over 7 million times. In fact, according to a 2015 poll, 13 percent of people say that they’ve gone on vacation or spent a holiday with their ex.

“pov you and your ex bought a non refundable, international spring break trip,” she wrote in text over the footage of her and the man traversing an airport.

A 2015 AP-WE tv poll of 1,241 adults found that six in ten people believe cutting off contact with an ex is very helpful for getting over a breakup. About the same percentage thought that it’s usually not worth attempting a friendship. And among those who usually don’t befriend exes, 38 percent have remained friends with at least one.

Since the first video, @Lydia_bird3, or Lydia Bird, has posted eight subsequent clips documenting the pair’s getaway to the Dominican Republic.

In the fourth video of the series, Bird writes that the trip came after a period of “not talking” to her ex.

Bird told Newsweek in an email that she and her ex-boyfriend, Jaeden, started dating when they were 16-years-old and were together for almost two years. They broke up just over a month ago.

She said the trip was booked when there was “no question” about whether they’d be together so they did not purchase any insurance. She said she tried to get his name changed to her mother’s, but the swap would mean paying for an additional trip.

“So we were stuck,” she said. “We would either have to pay for the trip and not go, or enjoy a vacation in a different country. I was super hesitant. I texted Jaeden offering him the tickets and I would pay my half, but he convinced me that we should not throw the vacation away.”

In a video posted Monday, Bird shared that though they requested a room with two beds they received just one. In another video, she shares pictures he took of her while there.

“[W]hen you and your ex are forced to go on a vacation, but he knows your angles so new posts on insta,” Bird writes in another video responding to a comment that saying “…he supposed to take the photos on vacation now.”

Some commenters are suspicious of the pair wondering if they really cut ties.

“[T]his is definitely a joke,” one commenter wrote to which Bird responded with a simple “no.”

‘This is definitely gonna be a [H]allmark movie," wrote another commenter under the video of the supposed bed mishap.

Bird pinned comments to all of the videos saying that she has been banned, seemingly from TikTok, but directed those following along to head to Instagram.

The Instagram account belonging to the ex-boyfriend features photos from their current trip as well as photos of the two of them from 2021.

Bird told Newsweek that she has been “shocked” at the attention the videos have received. She said some friends tried to change her mind about the trip, but her family was supportive of her decision to go as long as she was comfortable doing so.

One commenter on a video posted to TikTok Monday pushed back on the perception that exes have to hate one another.

“[E]verybody is so stuck on the idea you HAVE to hate your ex after a breakup, they wrote. “[J]ust be civil humans bro.”

“THANK U,” Bird responded.

“Overall, although this is such a crazy adventure, I do believe people in ex relationships can still be friends,” Bird told Newsweek. “I wouldn’t have wanted to throw away a vacation or a life experience. We are having a great time.”
