UTEP spokesman Jeff Darby said that Jason Rabedeaux died Monday in Vietnam. He was 49.
Rabedeaux became the Miners’ coach in 1999 and led the team for three seasons before resigning for personal reasons. He left UTEP with a 46-46 record.
The Sporting News named Rabedeaux its Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2001, when the Miners went 23-6.
He later served on the basketball staff at Marquette before heading overseas. He was coaching the Saigon Heat at the time of his death.
He previously was an assistant coach at Washington State and Oklahoma.
