Jeff Timmer, a political strategist and also a senior advisor to The Lincoln Project, issued the message to Trump, published by Michigan Advance, as he visited the state Thursday.
Throughout, he focused on the impact of COVID-19, highlighting to Trump: “Hundreds of thousands of people have died. More than one hundred thousand more will yet die. Tens of millions have lost their jobs. Millions of businesses have closed and will never reopen.”
The Quote
After criticizing the president’s actions amid the COVID-19 crisis, Timmer said:
“Your legacy will never be anything but death, destitution, demise and corruption.”
He also gave a damning description of Trump, in which he said: “Consider these traits: brave, courageous and heroic. You have none of them. Now ruminate on these: craven, greedy and cowardly. They describe you to a tee.”
Why It Matters
Running up to the election, Trump will be hoping visits to areas such as Michigan, where Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden leads in the polls, will help him better his position.
While he will want to point to actions he sees as his successes in office, the coronavirus pandemic has become a focal point for voters across the nation.
With this being deemed one of the most important issues to voters, perception of the candidates in their comments on this matter could prove decisive.
The president has faced criticism for his response to the pandemic, with interviews with journalist Bob Woodward in which the president said he downplayed the crisis earlier this year, prompting a backlash.
The Counterpoint
The president has long defended his actions on COVID-19, pointing to his China travel ban as evidence that he took its threat seriously early on.
He has also suggested the U.S. gets “VERY high marks” on its handling of the pandemic, without stating who these marks are from.
In terms of his legacy, the president might have pointed to employment and economic figures pre-COVID as a marker of success, while he has also touted recent job gains, though these have not recovered numbers to those before the pandemic.
Certain diplomatic actions, such as his administration’s work in helping to establish relations between Israel and the UAE, could also be recent actions Trump could potentially refer to in his legacy.
Newsweek has contacted the White House and Timmer for comment.
