Cooper confirmed the news on Twitter. “It’s true! I’m getting a Netflix special! And I couldn’t have done it without all your support, THANK YOU SO MUCH,” she tweeted.
According to a press release, the streaming variety special will include vignettes “dealing with issues of politics, race, gender, class, and other light subjects.” Additionally, Cooper will be joined by “a fantastic array of special guests who will participate in short interviews, sketches and more shenanigans.”
The team behind this upcoming special is stacked with talent. Actress Natasha Lyonne (Orange Is the New Black, Russian Doll) will direct and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live) will executive produce, along with producer Danielle Renfrew Behrens (Waitress) and Lyonne through their production company, Animal Pictures. Paula Pell (A.P. Bio) and Cooper will also executive produce.
Lyonne echoed Cooper’s excitement on Twitter. “How to special,” she wrote, referencing the “How to” titles that Cooper uses for her Trump-mocking TikToks. “Thrilled to be part of this team of hilarious queens.”
Cooper’s first Trump-related TikTok, “How to Medical,” featured her lip-synching and miming along to Trump’s incorrect comments about how ultraviolet rays and disinfectant injections could kill the coronavirus. The clip went viral shortly after its April release, and has been viewed more than 21 million times on TikTok, Twitter and YouTube, Entertainment Weekly noted.
Since then, Cooper has made several other satirical videos using audio from various Trump interviews, and she’s become a comedy sensation.
The satires have garnered the attention of many, and earned praise from celebrities such as Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Stiller, Halle Berry, Chrissy Teigen, Jerry Seinfeld and Cher.
Cooper formerly worked at Google. She was also a writer and correspondent on the CBS All Access pilot Old News, which was produced by none other than Stephen Colbert. Cooper is also the author of the best-selling books 100 Tricks to Appear Smart in Meetings and How to be Successful Without Hurting Men’s Feelings.
During her Tuesday appearance guest-hosting Kimmel’s talk show, Cooper got to show off her comedic chops—and her real voice!—in segments that didn’t involve lip-synching along to Trump’s comments.
The upcoming special, titled Sarah Cooper: Everything’s Fine, is slated to hit Netflix this fall.
Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment, but did not hear back in time for publication.
