One of our first-place winners of an American Photography award appeared on the cover of our Special Report on the Oklahoma City bombing. The limp , bloodied body of 1-year-old Baylee Almon, cradled in the arms of firefighter Chris Fields, has become the enduring image of that terrible day. The photograph, taken by amateur Lester LaRue, was almost identical to an image taken by another amateur named Charles Porter IV. LaRue’s photo was published for the first time on our cover, and Porter’s version (he was awarded a Pulitzer Prize last week) appeared in newspapers around the world. “If any one image could sum up the horror of that tragic event, that was it,” Colton says. “How ironic that it be recognized on the eve of the event’s first anniversary, this Friday.”
