The sports awards show, which celebrates the best moments over the past calendar year, brings together many notable names in sports and entertainment for an emotional and entertaining night. Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan will host this year’s festivities.

In addition to the traditional awards — which fans are able to vote on — there will be a handful of honorary awards given this year. Football coach Rob Mendez, who was born without arms or legs, will be awarded the Jimmy V Award for perseverance. Marine Kirstie Ennis will be given the Pat Tillman Award for service. Former UConn coach Jim Calhoun will be given Best Coach, while Bill Russell was named the winner of the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage.

Below is all the information for tuning into the 27th ESPY Awards, including how to watch, background on the show itself, and a full rundown of the nominees and winners.

What are the ESPYs?

The ESPYs are a sports awards show that honors the best athletes, moments and inspirational stories of the past year. Think of it as the Academy Awards, but for sports. It has been held every year since 1993, occupying one of the slowest days on the sports calendar — one day after the MLB All-Star Game — since 2002. Many celebrities have hosted the show, most frequently Samuel L. Jackson (four times).

Where are the ESPYs held?

The ESPYs are held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, which is known for hosting several award shows, including the Grammys and Emmys. It is located in the L.A. Live section of the city’s downtown area and is one of the largest indoor stages in the United States.

What does ESPY stand for?

ESPY stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (Award), which is an apt description of what the show sets out to accomplish.
