The 1998 season is often credited as the year that “saved” baseball, considering fans had been left wanting and jaded following the 1994 strike. The home run chase between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa — and burgeoning use of performance-enhancing drugs across the league — is seen as the turning point for many baseball fans getting back into the sport.
How the documentary handles the PED use of McGwire and Sosa will be something to monitor, though ESPN does a very good job with their documentaries. The networks 30-for-30 series is critically acclaimed, with “The Last Dance” pulling in record numbers while the sports world is halted.
