Authorities said Thomas Cromwell, 27, and Shawn Black, 29, escaped from River City Correctional Center in Camp Washington in the early hours of Saturday.

Detectives from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the Baymont Inn by Wyndham Hotel in Mason to arrest Cromwell at around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

But Cromwell refused to come out and told police he was armed, Mason Police Lt. Jeff Burson told Fox19.

The sheriff’s office called for assistance from the Mason Police Department and Warren County SWAT, and people inside the hotel were evacuated.

Cromwell could be seen at the window of a room on the hotel’s third floor, according to local news station WLWT. A woman was also in the room, but it was not clear if she was there voluntarily, the station reported.

The SWAT team reportedly stormed the hotel at around 3 a.m. on Tuesday and brought out a woman who appeared to be handcuffed, WLWT reported.

A spokesperson for the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations confirmed that Mason police had requested agents investigate an officer-involved shooting at the hotel, Fox 19 reported.

Warren County Coroner Russel Uptegrove confirmed that the escapee was dead, according to the station.

Black remains at large.

According to investigators, staff at River City on Saturday morning found Cromwell’s bed had been made up with pillows and clothing to make it look like someone was in it.

An emergency head count found Black was also missing.

The chief of security at River City said the pair had escaped through a window that staff discovered was broken on July 6 and was temporarily fixed with plywood. It was not clear how the window was broken or who did it.

Cromwell had been accused of felonious assault, and Black was charged with failure to comply with a police officer and receiving stolen property, the Inquirer reported.

The incident comes after a convicted murderer who escaped from a prison transport bus in Texas on May 12 was killed by police weeks later.

Authorities said Gonzalo Lopez, 46, killed a grandfather and his four grandsons at their ranch near Centerville, stole their truck and drove it more than 200 miles before he was shot dead by police.

Anyone with information about Black’s whereabouts is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 513-352-3040.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations have been contacted for comment.
