On Thursday, the superstar defenseman revealed the source of his absence: his wife, Melinda Karlsson, gave birth to a baby girl.
Karlsson posted a photo of himself and his family — all decked out in hospital scrubs — on Instagram to celebrate the occasion and announce his daughter’s birth.
“To my beautiful wife for doing everything in her power to bring our beautiful little baby girl in to this world, never have I met a more determined or stronger person than you,” Karlsson wrote in the caption. “It hasn’t been easy but after the rain finally our little rainbow arrived. Love you both more than I could ever imagine.”

Erik and Melinda Karlsson’s first child, a boy named Axel, was stillborn in March 2018.
