“I have been asked by everybody in the NFC East,” Aliotti told Oregonlive.com on Monday. “The Giants asked me to come back when Chip got the first job. I didn’t feel right doing that. Some teams have called when they’re getting ready to play the Eagles and they call and have certain questions on the thing. Unless I know the guy and he’s a good friend, I don’t get involved with that.”
Alioto certainly hasn’t been hired by the Cowboys; if he had, he’d be hard at work now, because Dallas hosts the Eagles Thanksgiving day, with the two teams tied for the division lead at 8-3.
The ploy by the Eagles’ opponents is reminiscent of the swarm of NFL teams coming after Nevada head coach Chris Ault after his retirement after the 2012 season. The Chiefs and then-new coach Andy Reid won the battle, hiring him last season as a consultant and putting him to work teaching his creation, the pistol offense, to Alex Smith. Ault had coached Colin Kaepernick at Nevada, and Kaepernick had just taken the 49ers to the Super Bowl.
