England faced their final games of 2022 buoyed with new optimism after an historic three-match tour of Australia.

Jones’ side headed Down Under on the back of a poor performance in the 2022 Six Nations Championship including defeats to rivals Ireland and eventual champions France.

However, they showed resilience to bounce back in Australia, despite the pressure of needing to return home with at least some pride restored.

Defeat in the first Test piled more negativity onto Jones and his players, but successive wins to end the tour changed the complexion of their situation ahead of four home games in November.

Their Autumn Nations Series began in inauspicious fashion, though, with a first home loss to Argentina in 16 years, before they rallied and pulled off a convincing win over Japan.

They again defied the odds to draw with New Zealand but ended 2022 with a one-sided defeat to world champions South Africa. A performance review led to Jones’ dismissal as coach, with just nine months to go before the Rugby World Cup.

On December 19, it was confirmed that former England captain and Leicester Tigers coach Steve Borthwick would take over as the man in charge of the national team.

What happened to England in the 2022 Six Nations?

Despite heading into the competition with confidence, England simply failed to get started in the 2022 Six Nations, with any momentum ended by three losses from five.

England did bounce back after an opening defeat to Scotland, with wins over Italy and Wales, but the strength of Ireland and France, the top two sides in the world at the moment, proved too much for Jones’ men.

What happened when England toured Australia?

Struggles in the Six Nations, coupled with a June loss to the Barbarians in London, meant the summer trip to Australia took on even more importance.

Jones opted to recall experienced pair Danny Care and Billy Vunipola to his squad and the latter dived over for a key try in the 17-25 second test win in Brisbane.

That victory set up a winner-takes-all showdown in Sydney, with 11 kicked points from Owen Farrell proving the difference in a 17-21 success.
