“Channeling my inner Bey,” read one post in Thompson’s Instagram Story. The message accompanied an image of a Beyoncé photo hanging on a wall that was presumably backstage at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, which is the site of this year’s Emmys ceremony.
The Emmy Awards show airs at 8:00 p.m. ET on NBC, and will simultaneously stream live for the first time on Peacock. E! will also broadcast a red carpet pre-show beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET, which will be hosted by actress Laverne Cox.
Succession leads this years Emmy nominations with 25 nods, including Outstanding Drama. Ted Lasso, which stars Jason Sudeikis, leads the comedy field with 20 nominations. Both will face competition from popular shows such as Better Call Saul and Squid Game in the drama categories, while critically-acclaimed programs such as Abbott Elementary and What We Do in the Shadows will challenge Sudeikis’ soccer comedy. Meanwhile, Only Murders in the Building, which stars comic legends Steve Martin and Martin Short, will also be a sentimental favorite among many viewers.
As part of Thompson’s Instagram activity related to the Emmys, he shared his Monday appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, where he appeared unannounced to sing a snippet of Clarkson’s hit “Since U Been Gone.”
Elsewhere on Instagram, Thompson poked fun at the continuing drama surrounding Olivia Wilde’s upcoming film Don’t Worry Darling, which has seen the director and actor Shia LaBeouf offer differing takes to the press on why he was not in the movie, as well as rumors of tensions between Wilde and star Florence Pugh.
Don’t Worry Darling actor Chris Pine has also made headlines for appearing less-than-enthused in some public appearances related to the film. Thompson referenced Pine’s behavior in an Instagram video by splicing together the bored-looking actor in a press appearance with himself discussing the Emmys.
“Don’t worry (darling), I promise we’re actually really excited about the #Emmys, Chris is just a bit jet lagged…I think…LFG!!!!” Thompson wrote in the video’s caption.
Thompson recently said that one thing viewers shouldn’t expect to see at the Emmys is a physical altercation similar to what happened in March at the Academy Awards when presenter Chris Rock was slapped onstage by Will Smith after he made a joke about Smith’s wife.
“I feel like a hug moment would have stopped all of that, you know what I’m saying?” Thompson said during an Emmy preview event on Wednesday night, according to Deadline. “I’m not going out there like hurting anybody’s feelings for the sake of other people laughing. We’re supposed to all be laughing together, even that person the joke is about.”
Newsweek reached out to Thompson for comment.
