The 45-year-old actress earned her first Emmy nomination for her role in HBO’s Sharp Objects in the lead actress in a limited series category.
The award was snagged by Michelle Williams for playing Gwen Verdon in FX’s Fosse/Verdon.
Adams’ snub has reignited disbelief about her perennial underdog status when it comes to big awards. The actress has previously been nominated for an Academy Award six times but has never won.
Amy Adams fans are annoyed about the Emmys
Adams was trending on Twitter Sunday night and well into Monday morning after her loss to Williams.
“Michelle Williams was great in FOSSE/VERDON, but Amy Adams has been robbed this entire awards season for what I consider a career-defining performance in SHARP OBJECTS and it makes me absolutely f***ing SICK to my stomach,” said one impassioned fan.
Lindsey Romain said: “love u michelle and this is a great speech but the next time amy adams loses the award she deserves i’m gonna f***ing kanye all of you.”
Cass joked: “if they ever create a “best amy adams category” amy will lose it to isla fisher.”

The lead actress in a limited series category was a particularly tough field this year. As well as Adams and Williams, Patricia Arquette was nominated for Escape at Dannemora, Joey King was nominated for The Act, and Niecy Nash and Aunjanue Ellis were nominated for Netflix’s powerful When They See Us.
Adams’ loss only further reminded fans of her losing streak at the Oscars, which extended to her sixth loss earlier in 2019.
Adams has been nominated for best supporting actress five times for Vice, The Master, The Fighter, Doubt and Junebug. She also has one lead actress nomination for American Hustle.
The Sharp Objects star has won two Golden Globes for best actress in a musical or comedy for American Hustle and Big Eyes.
Emmys 2019 winners: Game of Thrones, Fleabag
The big winners at the Emmy Awards Sunday included Game of Thrones, which won best drama series for its final season, and Fleabag, which won best comedy series, lead actress in a comedy for Phoebe Waller-Bridge, writing for a comedy series (also won by star/creator Waller-Bridge) and directing for a comedy series.
The Waller-Bridge-created Killing Eve also earned Jodie Comer the award for lead actress in a drama series. The lead actor in a drama series award went to Pose’s Billy Porter. Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage and Ozark’s Julia Garner won best supporting actor and actress in a drama series respectively.
For comedy, best actor went to Barry’s Bill Hader, while best supporting actor and actress were won by a pair of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel stars: Tony Shalhoub and Alex Borstein.
