This week, the video found its way to Reddit where it appeared on separate subreddits including “WatchPeopleDieInside” and “therewasanattempt.” The posts have received more than 65,000 upvotes and more than 19,000 upvotes, respectively.

In the video, Pentti Arajarvi—who is married to former Finnish president Tarja Halonen—and Princess Mary of Denmark are seen seated next to one another at dinner. The man is then caught on camera looking down at the woman’s chest for a moment until she looks at him and he quickly shifts his gaze to the ceiling. The princess seems to figure out what has occurred as she lifts her hand to her chest and starts adjusting the neckline of her dress.

According to news reports from the time, the incident occurred in 2012.

A 2013 study out of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln used eye-tracking technology to look into the science of such unwanted stares.

“When asked to focus on a woman’s appearance, study participants largely looked at women in ’that way’–they quickly moved their eyes to and then dwelled on a woman’s breasts and other sexualized body parts,” said a release from EurekAlert on the study.

While researchers found that, yes, this behavior was consistent among men, women’s eye patterns were similar to men’s.

“We do have a slightly different pattern for men than women, but when we looked at their overall dwell times—how long they focused on each body part—we find the exact same effects for both groups,” she said.

“Women, we think, do it often for social comparison purposes,” said Sarah Gervais, one of the two psychologists who produced the study.

Commenters on Reddit entertained the notion that he might have been admiring the princess’ jewelry. She is seen wearing a large necklace and a badge pinned to her top.

“Aren’t people supposed to look at jewelry? If you happen to put it near your boobs, people gonna be looking at your boob area,” one commenter wrote, though noting how controversial the comment might come across.

“I realize this is perhaps dangerously close to the ‘she was asking for it’ concept, but the whole point of jewelry is for people to see it. Maybe wear earrings, rings, or a bracelet instead if you’re worried about it,” the commenter continued.

One commenter, claiming to be Danish, wrote that they feel “protective” of the princess and the video made them “kind of feel like strangling” the man.

“If a dude at a bar ogles me I’ll go away at best and flip him off at worst, no hard feelings, but ogling a PRINCESS at an [official] dinner party??? Get it together dude!!!,” the commenter continued.
