Abe’s greatest moment in sports occurred in 1952 in Berlin. A record crowd of 75,000 had come to see the Globetrotters play in the same stadium in which Jesse Owens had won his gold medals during the 1936 Olympics. Abe arranged for Jesse to land by helicopter in the middle of the field. Jesse came out wearing the same uniform he’d worn in the Olympics. Everyone in the stands stood up cheering. The mayor of Berlin came out to greet Jesse and he said, “In 1936, Hitler refused to shake your hand. Today, I give you both of mine.” There was not a dry eye in the place.
