Sedalia Police arrested Dennis Weaver, 62, after he crashed his truck into the front of the Wendy’s restaurant on Monday.
One woman, Carol Barnes, 81, died in the crash. Her husband, Donald Barnes, 85, a retired local judge, was injured and taken to University Hospital in Columbia, where he is reported to be in intensive care.
KMBC reported that among those hurt is a 10-year-old with moderate injuries, two adults with minor injuries, and another adult who sought his own treatment. Police have said those injured in the incident are expected to be fine.
SPD Cpl. A.J. Silvey told the Sedalia Democrat: “There was an alcohol use detected on the scene, so he (Weaver) was placed under arrest due to that. However, he was taken to Bothwell [Regional Health Center] where he was admitted.
“At this time, charges are not being sought, however, the investigation is still early, we’re waiting to get all of our findings before anything proceeds.”
A police spokesperson told WKRN that Weaver was now in jail and that no formal charges had been filed against him as of Tuesday evening.
According to KMBC, a preliminary investigation suggests that the truck was driving south on Limit Avenue when it left the road. It went through the business frontage, hit trees and handrails, and then hit the restaurant.
Mrs. Barnes is said to have been an active member of the Sedalia community, along with her husband. Sedalia Police Commander David Woolery told WKRN: “The victim was a longtime resident of our community and a very popular person. It saddens all of us in this community. Our hearts go out to all the victims involved.”
The Sedalia Democrat reported that Mr. Barnes was responsible for a project to hand murals at the Pettis County Courthouse.
Mrs. Barnes was known for being involved in the Helen G. Steele Music Club and Church Women United, and was the first faculty music instructor at State Fair Community College, according to the publication.
Pastor Marilyn Grechus, who leads Sedalia Community of Christ, told WKRN: “I know the whole community is going to be in shock from this. They’ve been involved in the community all their lives.”
Mary Jo Sartin, a fellow church member, told the outlet: “This family and this church community have lost a dear soul, someone who was very much loved and respected.”
