The victim has been named as 68-year-old Humberto Soriano Prieto by the Las Presena newspaper, which is based in his country of origin, Honduras.
Hialeah Police said the victim was stabbed after getting into an altercation with the elderly man at the Lake Point Plaza apartments on the morning of July 14. The victim was airlifted to the Jackson Memorial Hospital, but later died from his injuries.
The suspect was taken to police headquarters for questioning, but was transported to hospital after falling ill. The suspect has not been formally identified and he is reportedly aged in his late 80s or early 90s. According to CBS Miami, the suspect did not appear in court on July 15 because of a preexisting medical problem.
Carlos Bringas described his shock as he witnessed the attack on the 68-year-old on the second floor of the apartment complex.
“I see the old man [suspect] backs out of the door and then the other gentleman comes out and when the other gentleman came out, he walked to the right of the door and he stumbled,” he told CBS Miami. “That’s when I saw the old man hitting him with a metal object. I thought it was a hammer.
“When the gentlemen fell, the old man came above him and I saw he was hammering [down]. He had a big, shiny metal object… I couldn’t fathom that it was a stabbing.”
According to Las Presena, Prieto had been legally living in the U.S. for the past 16 years. He is reported to have children who live in North Carolina and in Miami, Florida.
The Hialeah Police Department did not immediately return a request for further comment.
Earlier this month, a Florida woman was arrested after allegedly attacking her boyfriend with a knife after he complained he was too tired for sex.
Jennifer Lee Chapman, 37, of Dunedin, is accused of repeatedly slashing at her boyfriend’s arm and shoulder with a kitchen knife, as well as head-butting and punching, during the altercation at their apartment on the morning of July 5.
The boyfriend originally tried to stop Chapman cutting herself with the knife before the pair wrestled with each other on the kitchen floor. Chapman was charged with felony aggravated battery in connection with the incident.
