Portland police raced to a property in the 3600 block of Northeast Alameda Street in the Beaumont-Wilshire neighborhood after being alerted to reports that two people had been shot at about 8:52 a.m. on December 10.

A police statement said: “When [officers] arrived, they found two deceased, one male and one female.

It continued: “Based on preliminary investigation at the scene, no suspects are currently being sought.”

The Portland Police Homicide Unit closed Northeast Alameda Street at Northeast 37th Avenue while officers carried out an investigation.

Police have not offered any further details about the shooting or the circumstances that led up to it.

According to The Oregonian, the couple were identified as Peter L. Reader Jr., 83, and Barbara Reader, 82. They had lived in the home for 40 years.

Neighbor Vaughn Wicker said he knew the couple since he moved into the area 34 years ago and said the Readers appeared to have a strong relationship.

He told the outlet: “Believe me, we’re still shocked. These people were crazy about each other. They were practically joined at the hip.”

Wicker claimed Barbara Reader suffered from dementia that had gotten worse in the past year and that Peter Reader also had his own health problems.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, a database that collects information about shootings from across the U.S., nine people have been fatally shot in Portland since November 1 this year.
