Montgomery, a Shelby, N.C., native, will take over a program that fired Ruffin McNeil after six seasons and a 42-34 record. Former Michigan coach Brady Hoke was reportedly linked to the job recently.

Montgomery, 37, is a Duke alum who helped lead the Blue Devils to national prominence as the offensive coordinator the past two seasons. 

He also served as a wide receivers coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2010 to 2012. Montgomery played wide receiver for the Panthers, Broncos and Raiders in the NFL from 2000 to 2003.
