Urena comes to the club following a short stint with Brondby IF in Denmark. Urena also has spent time playing professionally in his native Costa Rica and in Russia. The 26-year-old forward has racked up 45 appearances for Costa Rica’s national team and played in all but one of the team’s matches at the 2014 World Cup.

Giovinco on Barcelona: ‘I’d have been a ball boy’

“We don’t just look at a player’s merits or international appearances,” Earthquakes general manager said Jesse Fioranelli in a news release Friday. “We focus more on the player’s skill set to understand whether or not they match what the team needs. Marcos is a very attack-minded player that will be a very important element in binding our midfield and attack. He has great technique and can make many key passes while covering a lot of ground. I think he’s going to be an exciting player for us.”

Urena joins a San Jose side that scored just 32 goals in 34 league matches in 2016.
