The Nugget on Friday had three betting windows dedicated for wagers on these early Games of the Year.   Bets were limited to $1,000, and gamblers could take whacks on five games at a time before getting back in line for more.

“We took in a lot of action, about five times as much as we took last year at the same stage,” said Miller. “There was definitely a difference of opinion with a few bettors on the lines we posted, and they hammered the numbers pretty good.”

The team bet against the most was Boise State. Bettors took Washington +13 all the way down to +8.5 in Boise State’s season opener on Friday, Sept. 4. They also took Colorado State from +12 to +10.5 (Oct. 10) and Utah State +9.5 down to +6 (Oct. 16) in their respective home games against the Broncos.

“The funny thing about Boise State is that we actually dropped their rating a bit before posting the numbers,” said assistant manager Aaron Kessler, who helped set the numbers with Miller and the Gold Sheet’s Bruce Marshall.

Bettors went against Arkansas in a neutral-site game vs. Texas A&M on Sept. 26, taking the Razorbacks from 6.5-point favorites to -1.5; from -6.5 to -1.5 vs. Auburn on Oct. 24; and from 1.5-point dogs to +5 at LSU on Nov. 14.  But they took Arkansas +7.5 at Alabama on Oct. 10 and laid -10 vs. Mississippi State on Nov. 21.

Gamblers are also fading Missouri, as the Tigers went from -11 to -9 vs. South Carolina on Oct. 3, from -10 to -5.5 vs. Florida on Oct. 10 and from -12 to -7.5 for a neutral-site game vs. BYU on Nov. 21.

BYU and Auburn, on the other hand, saw plenty of support.  In addition to the aforementioned game against Arkansas, bettors took Auburn +4 at LSU on Sept. 19, pushing the line down to +3, and laid -4 with the Tigers vs. Ole Miss, prompting an adjustment to -6 for the Halloween game.

Bettors were also excited about taking Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan Wolverines against Ohio State in the regular-season finale on Nov. 28.

“We had Ohio State -16 at Michigan and they took the Wolverines all the way down to +13,” said Miller.
