According to a school reopening tracking map from EdWeek, a majority of states have left the decision to reopen schools to local school districts and their health departments. The decision by states to leave the responsibility up to localities has sparked tensions between teachers unions and state’s board of education. Prior to taking office, in July Biden released a five-step road map on how to safely reopen schools, which came in response to then-President Donald Trump’s push to fully reopen all schools across the country....

Taylor’s partner, Kenneth Walker, heard the police enter the apartment but mistook them for intruders. Walker opened fire on the officers, hitting one. Officers returned fire with roughly 25 rounds. Taylor, who had no criminal record, was shot approximately eight times. One fossil, found just east of Kenya’s Lake Turkana, is the upper jaw of a habilis from 1.44 million years ago. This species was thought to have gone extinct about 1.6 million years ago. The other find, from the same site, is an erectus skull from 1.55 million years ago. The more recent date for habilis shows that he and erectus were contemporaries for half a million years, until 1....

Jeff Tedford resigned Wednesday as coach of the CFL’s BC Lions, saying he planned to return to the U.S. and college coaching. He just wrapped up his first season with the Lions, leading BC to a 7-11 regular-season record before falling to Calgary in the first round of the playoffs. Demetrius Hollins was was pulled over by Gwinnett County Police Sergeant Michael Bongiovanni near Atlanta in 2017, when Hollins was 22. He told reporters Wednesday that he still has “some kind of PTSD from this situation.” In video footage filmed by a witness, Bongiovanni appears to punch Hollins while Hollins is standing with his hands up as he steps out of his car. The city of Detroit is seeking $182,193.75 in attorneys’ fees from Powell and her team for litigating a case alleging voter fraud during Michigan’s 2020 presidential elections. The fraud case was dismissed and Powell’s appeal and subsequent petition to the U.S. Supreme Court were both denied. Now Powell’s legal representative has asked a federal district court to reduce the city’s demand to $21,964.75. The amount matches the amount sought by Michigan’s Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in legal fees associated with the same fraud cases filed by Powell and her team....
